Hellhole (1985)

A woman witnesses her mother being murdered by a scarf-wielding maniac on the look for some business papers at the house. She wakes up with amnesia in a mental institution. However, those who murdered her mother are back searching her out. Additionally, the head matron seems to be performing sadistic experiments on the inmates.

Despite taking place in a sanitorium instead of a penitentiary, this sleazy slice has all the trappings of a classic women-in-prison flick, albeit with none of the elements being done particularly well. There’s lesbianism, the sadistic head matron who also performs Ilsa-like experiments (Dyanne Thorne turns up in a smaller, unrelated role), an extended shower sequence capped off by some nude fighting, a beautiful and innocent heroine, a doctor who falls in love with her, etcetera, you get the picture by now. The cast is a solid ensemble of b-film veterans, including the always dependable Mary Woronov, Ray Sharkey (is there any other career that failed to live up to its initial promise as much as his?), Marjoe Gortner, Terry Moore, and Robert Z’Dar. Edy Williams is on hand for the sole purpose of showing some skin, which we unfortunately never see from leading lady Judy Landers. I may have enjoyed this more under different circumstances. For the last few months, I’ve willfully sought out a lot of crap and this picture may have been my breaking point.
